This ain't your grandma's ball of yarn
A new generation joins the knitting circle

"What do you call a group of 20- and 30-somethings who gather en masse to create colorful items, swap tips and mingle?

"Loosely knit," quipped 26-year-old knitter Lisa Beckham.

"You're so knotty!" replied 23-year-old fellow knitter Valerie Staten. "See, if we didn't have a knitting group we would make those stupid jokes to everyone."

For various reasons, from the simple desire for cool cell phone covers to the belief that the hobby exemplifies new-wave feminism, young people across Houston are getting knitty with it.

"I think we're the new generation to take on the womanly arts," said 25-year-old Brittanie Hoofard at a recent Stitch 'N Bitch-Central Houston meeting at Cafe Express on West Gray..."

"...In Houston alone, hundreds of avid knitters regularly attend meetings with groups like Stitch 'N Bitch (which has seven clusters in the Houston area) and meetup.com (which boasts more than 150 members), hang out at yarn shops and post messages at online forums.

One recent Thursday, a dozen members of the Central Houston Stitch 'N Bitch group sat around a table at Cafe Express, discussing everything from favorite yarns to boyfriends to the knitting references in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy movie..."
