Meetup Organizer of the Week

Ivan, Organizer of SWOT

Check out his awesome interview here

Meetups in the News! Washington Post, Toronto Star, Moscow Times and more!

Congrats to all these Meetups in the news!

This Sunday's The Washington Post (3/19) will run an entire spread on Dog Meetups! One article follows around tiny Hercules, a "toy" Chihuahua and frequent Meetup'er. Says the Washington Post: "Hercules also likes to spend time with pups his own size, and he does so most months thanks to the area's six-month-old Chihuahua Meetup. Organized by Venessa Mendenhall, 26, who's the mom of Lil' Killer (aka Lily), the group has met during the cold months at Petco in Cleveland Park and otherwise at dog parks, such as Montrose Park in Georgetown. Mendenhall says it offers a safe place for these tiny breeds to build confidence, explore life on the ground (instead of being coddled too much, as they commonly are) and develop positive social traits." Other Doggy Meetup coverage includes "Met at the Meetup", "Other Area Pup Meetups" and this AWESOME slideshow, complete with audio commentary! Washington, DC area Dogs Unite!

UPDATE: Click here for a PDF scan of the article! (Which has since been reprinted in the Denver Post and on AZcentral.com!)

The West Valley, CA Attention Deficit Disorder Meetup got a write up in their local paper, The Acorn (3/16). Says Susan Ford, Organizer: "I wanted to create a safe environment where local people dealing with ADD and ADHD could gather to share experiences, progress and thoughts with one another." Way to go Susan!

CSPAN's Washington Journal (3/15) interviews Michael Toner, Federal Election Chairman (R) who mentions the "Meetup Phenomenon" a few times. Looks like political organizing and political Meetups are on the horizon again!

The Toronto Star (3/16) has a wonderful piece about the local Karaoke scene in "Karaoke rocks their worlds". "The more variety the better," Toronto Karaoke Organizer Jonha Libster tells the Toronto Star. "'It's all about participation,' Libster says repeatedly during a Karaoke Meetup.com event he organized earlier this month at XO Karaoke on Bloor St. W., where customers rent out karaoke boxes or small rooms for private parties."

Moscow Moms and their Mommy Milk Meetup grab the attention of the Moscow Times (3/15). "Moscow's Mommy Milk Meetup for breast-feeding moms is the largest Mommy Milk group in the world. Every other week, around 20 of its 60 members, along with their hungry babies and the occasional dad, get together to share breast-feeding problems and tips."

The New York Times (3/12) covers Scott's New Tech Meetup. And puts Meetup -- and Silicon Alley -- on the front page of Sunday Style Section, saying "All is Well". Who said Geeky Meetups weren't stylish?

BusinessWeek Online (3/10) covers our big news in a big way. Exciting, to say the least! Read "eBay's Affinity for Meetup.com" here. Others who covered the news include: The New York Times piece above, The Dow Jones Venture Wire, Auctionbytes, Corante, ClickZ, The Register, UK, Netimperative, UK, SJ Mercury News' SiliconBeat, Search Engine Journal, Admanager, Netherlands, among others.

The Huntsville Times (3/8) reports on how "Members of Huntsville's La Leche League and Mommy Milk Meetup breast-feeding support groups have been lobbying Judiciary Committee members..."

Also in the News:

Banned in the UAE. We learn Meetups are banned in the United Arab Emirates. According to AME Info "The ultimate Middle East business resource" : "The UAE bans photo-sharing site Flickr, MSN's MySpace, Google's Orkut, and regularly blocks community tools such as Meetup.com."

MORE Punky Mom Meetup coverage. The original Punky Mom Meetup article published in the Orlando Sentinel (2/27) has grown legs and has been syndicated to other newspapers around the nation this week, including: St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Arizona Republic, Chicago Tribune, OCRegister, Roanoke Times, Houston Chronicle, Seattle Times, Fort Wayne News Sentinel, and likely others thanks to Knight Ridder.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer (2/25) recommends Yoga Meetups for Yoga Buffs.
